The Portuguese Robotics Open, which had its 1st edition in 2001, aims at promoting Science and Technology among students from the 1st grade to university studies, as well among the general public, through robot competitions. The Festival takes place every year in a different city, and includes also an international conference where national an international researchers present their latest work in the field of Robotics.
The event has had an enormous growth since the 1st edition, both in the number of teams, participants and visitors. The Portuguese Robotics Open is currently an initiative of Portuguese Society of Robotics.
Search and rescue of victims of large catastrophes is a hard and noble goal for human rescue teams. Robots may help this task increasing the speed of the search, protecting lifeguards and save more persons on time. Programming these robots is a hard challenge too.
Dance is a source of joy and happiness for all ages. Programming robots that dance autonomously is another source of joy for the young participants of this league, one of the most popular leagues of this event. Very often, both programmers and robots dance alltogether sharing their joy with the audience.
Young participants that love soccer , including robot soccer, aiming to become world champions such as their university colleagues that were world champions in 2008 in the RoboCup Middle Sized League. In this league they have the chance to test their assets and show the best of their skills in building and programming soccer robots.
Driverless autonomous cars are the future. This league is an original challenge of this Festival Every year new challenges are introduced, providing a platform to show the latest developments in research on Autonoumous Driving.
Robotic Soccer is a hot challenge to promote research in cooperative robotics. Teams made of 5-6 robots play a soccer game to score more goals than the oponnent team. To play the game successfully, the robots must share information with their teammates, localize themselves, get an estimate of the ball position as well as the position of the opponents and team members.
Robotics is a widely experimental area and robots are nowadays widely spread in land, sea, air, space, indoor and outdoor environments. In this new league, which is in its demo phase, several research groups are invited to present their best achievements.
Automation is one of the most successfull areas of robots, introducing innovations year after year. In this new league, which is in its demo phase, the robots will evolve in a semi-real semi virtual factory, executing transportation, processing, storage and other automation tasks The winner will be the most competent robot accomplishing these tasks.

The 11th Internation Conference on Mobile Robotics and Competitions is a scientif meeting in the field of mobile robotics, organized with the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE and supported by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) and its Portuguese chapter. Robotica 2011 is also a RoboCup Local Event.
The conference will take place in the IST congress center which can accomodate up to 300 people.
Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) provides top quality higher education, strongly exposed to Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) activities, immersing its students in an exciting and global environment geared towards solving the challenges of the XXIst Century. In 2011 IST commemorates its 100th anniversary.
